Setting
Winter takes place in the year 10,243 AD, over 8,000 years after a massive nuclear war rendered the planet uninhabitable. Over time the massive amounts of radiation have decreased, and the smog and debris in the atmosphere has been naturally reduced; however, as far as we know, the planet has been uninhabitable for so long that there is no animal or plant population still.
The game begins inside a biome, a giant technologically-maintained, climate-controlled environment under the care of the artificial intelligence unit D.O.R.O.T.H.I.E. The biome is massive, with a center dome that is 500 miles in diameter and at least 250 miles tall at the highest point. From there the biome has 'arms' and catwalks that lead to smaller biomes under different climate conditions. Some of these arms have been damaged by natural conditions, and possibly threats from inside the biome, in the last several thousand years. As such, many of these areas are yet to be discovered.

If you are entering the game through the jamjar mechanism, your character will awake in the main biome in the Garden of Eden. The terrain there is varied, and given the size of the biome it may take your character a while to realize that they are in an artificial environment instead of the wilderness. The characters have not yet discovered that they are in a biome.
If you are entering the game through the AU mechanism, let the mods know and we'll work something out for you!
These links describe the various areas of the world. You are also encouraged to create your own settings within the biomes, and if you would like to suggest an entirely new self-contained environment, we have a biome suggestion post here.
