The Shadow Isles

Little is known about the mysterious Shadow Isles. An eternally thick, unnatural fog blankets the islands from the view of outsiders. It is thought that the islands are home to countless forms of undead, though no one seems eager to perform the exploration necessary to find out the truth.

In the Isles, there are many shades of death, and each is embraced rather than feared or reviled. One can only ascend from one state to the next with the magical aid of a skilled professional. The Ferryman, is one individual who serves this role. He acts as a ferryman for the Isles' undead denizens, helping them climb death's many-tiered ladder.

Many forms of undead and abominations roam the islands that are surrounded by a very dark sea. It in itself isn't filled with immediate danger but prolonged stay in the water may invite unwelcoming creatures to show you a rough time.

The islands themselves are rich in resources. Minerals, rare plants, strong wood, oil, and many others. There are also old ruins filled with both treasure and many more dangers in the forms of traps and hideous creatures that were left long ago to guard them. It is possible to live in the Shadow Isles, but those who do, do so at their own risk. Undead might be the least of your problems and those are fairly bountiful in the Shadow Isles.

The Shadow Isles Biome is a subterranean biome inside the Main Biome. It is reachable through a hatch in the Forest. Once inside, it gives the illusion of open space.

The world outside the biome is freezing cold, the result of a nuclear winter that enveloped the Earth after a war several centuries ago. The weather has recently, as in the last hundred years, improved slightly as the dust in the atmosphere has finally begun to settle. Thus, outside, there is snow and ash everywhere, and the average temperature is cold enough that it will be distinctly uncomfortable for your characters to spend more than an hour out there in their current clothing during the day. At night, prolonged exposure will be fatal.

The winds have kicked the snow and ash into dunes, which range from a story tall to only a few inches above the ground. Some objects may be completely covered, others may be uncovered merely by tripping over them or seeing them jut out of the snow.

Within a mile of the biome, there are the remains of a densely populated city. As it's been thousands of years, most everything they find will be fossilized, if preserved at all. While this area once had forest terrain, all evidence of that has rotted away. Metal remains only in extremely fragile and damaged states, cement has mostly been destroyed by water, and stone has been eroded - it will be very hard to tell what's what unless it's been completely frozen. It is possible to find mummified remains of humans, animals or other objects inside ice blocks.

Better preserved is a 23rd century subway system under the city, which, while not usable, is at least identifiable. A few trains can be found and, while old and delapidated, appear to have been in use within the last few months. Some of them have been repaired with rigged-up combinations of other items.

Also within a mile of the biome are pieces of spacecraft wreckage, far more recent than the remains of the city (as in, the last ten years). Feel free to invent what you would like about this spacecraft wreckage, but no blackbox recordings please.

The biome is based in South America, so bear that in mind when considering what the architecture might have looked like. Some buildings are perfectly preserved in blocks of ice, though damaged by the weight of the snow on top of them; others are nothing but wreckage.

As a note, your character's powers will not work outside the biome. This includes non-human physical traits such as Noir's monochromatic coloring or Jak's ears. This is crucial as it is a plot point we're planning to hit sometime soon. The outside of the biome is now an open area that can be used without mod permission; feel free to explore it.
